Nominated for the 1997 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Beyond Silence (Jenseits der Stille) is the richly woven story of Lara, the hearing daughter of deaf parents. The movie centers on her love for music, initiated when her musician-aunt presents her with a clarinet, and her natural talent for the instrument, which begins to create a rift in the close-knit family.
For years, Lara has been the link between the deaf world inhabited by her parents and a hearing society, often leaving school to translate for them in business meetings. When she is given a clarinet, her desire to realize her full potential as a musician causes her father confusion, in part because he cannot understand or experience his daughter's love for music, and also because of a fear that Lara's aunt, Clarissa, is attempting to take her away.
The international cast's portrayal of Lara (Sylvie Testud & Tatjana Trieb), father Martin (Howie Seago), mother Kai (Emmanuelle Laborit), and aunt Clarissa (Sibylle Canonica), will have audiences totally immersed in the story from beginning to end.
