About Square Wave Technology

Alarm clocks with the traditional high pitched signaling alarm have worked effectively for a number people over the years; it has also been their only choice. However, for those people who really need an alarm clock to wake up such people who are heavy sleepers, people with hearing loss, children and young adults, older adults and people on medication, the traditional high pitched frequencies used in alarm clocks are not very effective. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) became concerned that these same high pitched signals are used in smoke detectors and that there was a significant failure rate of smoke detectors at waking sleeping people.

Alarm signaling studies commissioned by the U.S. Fire Administration and the Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of NFPA, demonstrated that a 520Hz square-wave signal is proven to be most effective at waking heavy sleepers – waking 92 to 96 percent of these individuals. The low-frequency signal was 63 to 69 percent more effective at waking children, heavy sleepers and people with hearing loss than current high-pitched alarms.

The benefits of the 520Hz Square Ware alarm signal were so dramatic that the NFPA, in the 2010 edition of NFPA 72® National Fire Alarm Code, will require use of a low-frequency (520 Hz) square-wave signal for fire alarms installed in residential bedrooms by January 2010, and in all commercial sleeping rooms by January 2014.

There are tens of millions of adults and children who have difficulty waking up using traditional high frequency alarm clocks. Add to that, there are as many as 70 million Americans having high-frequency hearing loss who would benefit from the 520 Hz Square Wave signal.

I love the clock. I am hearing impaired and most alarm clocks do not work because they make sound which I can't hear. I use the blinking function of this clock and it does work because it lights up. Plus it has many different function you can use. (Posted on 7/21/2016)

I had a little difficulty setting the alarm at first ( I'm not very good with directions) however I contacted Harris , Audrey responded now I have it going . I am deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other. With most alarm clocks I sleep right through it especially if I am sleeping on my good side. With this clock , it flash , blinks vibrates and the lamp goes on. I no longer sleep through it. Great product, with great customer service. You have to Love it. (Posted on 4/14/2016)

I love this clock, it's the only thing that wakes me up. The last 4 I have purchased however, do not work. The alarm, lamp nor the bed shaker work.

    Overall Satisfaction

this is a great product so far, we have only used it a few times as we just purchased a few weeks ago, but my son loves the big bold red numbers and the fact that you can have 2 vibrating discs attached as an option; it's got the snooze function which is great. He seems to like it and that is what matters most! Loved the sweet surprise when we opened the box! Thank You Harris Communications. (Posted on 6/23/2015)

  13. Finally, an alarm clock that works! Review by Mom the human alarm clock
    Overall Satisfaction

My 16-year-old son is a heavy sleeper. He had tried numerous alarm clocks and still slept through everything. I am thrilled that he will finally wake up with this clock. He is using the vibrating disk and alarm combination but if it stops working for him, I plan to use the option of plugging his lamp into the clock in place of the alarm or disk. 14. Nice but sad news Review by Larry
    Overall Satisfaction

I have it a over a year. the red digits and blue buttons were so bright and no dim switch for display. I had wash cloth to cover to make dim look. Tho other is sad news there had no brown power with battery operation. The battery Operation had handle for alarm sets not clock itself when the power was failed. i purchased the small APC power conversion for clock and computers. it really worked well for my home becuase my home had few times shut down during day time and night if storm coming. the alarm is worked well with APC power conversion and woke up that morning while the house had no power. suprised me... cost is killing me as both clock and APC about 225 dollars. but they were worth to me.

  15. Good initial quality. Broken after only one year Review by Amy
    Overall Satisfaction

This clock broke Monday, after a little over a year of use. It was not dropped, treated harshly, or damaged in any way. I was very happy with it before now, however. But at $80 for only a year of use, I cannot recommend. (Posted on 4/3/2012)

  16. Difficult to set Review by Ginny
    Overall Satisfaction

I am having a very difficult time setting the alarm which I have found confusing to the point that I am afraid to trust it if I need to be awakened for an important appointment. In addition, the blue and red numerals are SO bright that they serve as an unofficial night light in the bedroom. (Posted on 9/30/2011)

  17. Love it! Review by Ethel
    Overall Satisfaction

I bought it last April and I love it. It has two alarm settings. My husband has to wake up at 4am and me at 6am. I hate to change the time all times on other old clock. It doesn't have to use vibration-can use the lamp. (Posted on 9/16/2011)
