A smoke alarm is a simple way to be alerted when there is a fire. Harris Communications carries many different models designed to alert all types of users, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many alarms can be interconnected with other alarms, connected to strobe lights, and some that alert you by speaking rather than an alarm.
There are 2 types of smoke alarms: photoelectric smoke alarms are generally better at detecting smoldering fires, such as from a couch or bed, while ionization smoke alarms are generally better at fast flames, such as burning paper. Having both types of smoke alarms in a home can provide better coverage in the event of a fire.
