The Gallaudet Children's Dictionary of American Sign Language presents more than 1,000 ASL sign drawings arranged alphabetically by English terms, plus delightful color illustrations for each sign. Also featuring English sentences for each sign, this dictionary stands alone as the best, most entertaining ASL reference volume for deaf and hearing children alike.
This bilingual dictionary serves a twofold purpose—to increase and improve deaf children's English vocabulary skills and to teach American Sign Language to hearing children. Research indicates that all children benefit from knowing more than one language, and they acquire the second language relatively quickly when they start learning it before the age of twelve. This dictionary will help deaf children make the connections between the signs they already know and the written English words that express the same concept. As a result, their reading vocabulary will grow, and they will gain an understanding of how English words can have different meanings. Hearing children will learn a new language and a new way to communicate.
The introduction explains the history and culture of American Sign Language as well as how to sign and fingerspell. The accompanying DVD shows native ASL signers demonstrating how to form each sign plus 150 ASL sentences. Signs can be watched in full speed or slow motion. The index listing all of the English vocabulary for each sign completes The Gallaudet Children's Dictionary of American Sign Language as the new standard ASL reference for children, their parents, and their teachers. Overall Satisfaction It is great and enrich children's dictionary. I will recommend that I will ask Deaf schools where I work, to get orders for elementary school. It is beautiful pictures and it is great beneficial for Deaf children to find ASL words independence.
Thanks for that book to develop from Gallaudet. (Posted on 1/6/2017) -
Awesome color sign dictionary Review by Talks with Hands
Overall Satisfaction I love it! It's easy for lower elementary students to use. The color makes it fun to browse through the dictionary. I love the pictures and easy to understand signs. It's a bonus that some words show synonyms for one sign. That's very helpful for our deaf and hard of hearing students. The librarian wants to order several more for the public school library. Great Dictionary Review by Sassy
Overall Satisfaction I like the dictionary, the illustrations and examples are great. I wish you would develop another book with the same signs and illustrations grouped in categories: home, school, food etc., so you could sit with a student teach a category without searching throughout the dictionary to find the signs. I think you need both. (Posted on 3/5/2015)
